Patriotic Photo Display

Hi y'all!  Shutterfly recently asked me "What can you do with a print", and I responded with THIS! :) 

They were kind enough to give me some awesome free prints, which I cut down to size and attached to the collage by using some sweet mini clothespins! Since they are not glued down to the board, I can switch out the pictures anytime I want!  I used a 12x12 piece of wood, with some scrapbook paper Mod Podged to it in order to dress it up a bit.  I cut my stars and stripes with my craft cutter, though you can cut them out by hand and I used some sweet 3D stickers to accent the whole thing.

 

The focus of my collage was my sweet boy, Chris, he's my eldest.  I used pictures from when he was a baby right up to one taken last summer at Dorney Park in Pennsylvania.

Rehash that Trash: Reveal 3-Nautical inspired pillow and uphosltered chair redo

Hi y'all! It's the FINAL reveal!! I hope you have enjoyed this fun competition as much as I have! The final item on the trash list, a fabric project! Not just any fabric project, though, a repurposed fabric project.

This fabric started out as curtains which I found at the thrift shop for only $2.  I knew they were perfect fabric for any of my boys' room projects.

I found this chair (with its mate) curbside last year.  I knew it had good bones, but it needed some love!  I had to glue and clamp a few parts of it, as they were falling apart.  I, then, reupholstered the chair.  I won't bore you with a written tutorial, it's been done a million times.  I'll only tell you to make sure you line up the fabric right and center it, before taking your upholstery staple gun to it!  I added some extra batting to it to make it super plush. :)  My only question is whether or not to paint the chair.  I love the color and the vintage feel to it as is, though I might shellack it to give it a nice gleam.  I'm also tempted to stain it, though I especially love how beat up it is.  My boys like it as is, also.  What do y'all think?

Rehash that Trash: Reveal 2- Nautical inspired dresser

Hi y'all! :)

I realize I'm a day late and a dolla' short (what else is new?), BUT here is my 2nd reveal for our awesome "Rehash that Trash: Blogger Showdown"!!  Also,r I realize the pictures are AWFUL and dark, but it's super dark, dreary, and rainy here on my little mountain today.  Perhaps when the sun decides to visit my neck of the woods again, I will rephotograph this piece!

As per our "Trash List", this was supposed to be a storage piece! If you follow along here, you might know that I have been working on the boys' room for a few months now.  I decided to keep with the theme and add some sweet sailor's knots to the dresser as pulls!

If I hadn't been so dang sick last week, I might have finished my piece on time.  Alas...it's a good thing De was having some issues as well! ;)  Here's the full shot:

Yes, there is something clearly shoved underneath it.  I'm just keepin' it real, y'all!

Pardon the flash, but again, it was super dark!  I wanted to show you what is right above the dresser, some sweet $5 sailor's knots artwork I scored at a garage sale last summer.

Back to the dresser.
The color of the dresser was "oops paint" (giggle) and that meant it was on sale for $3!  I mixed in 5 drops of Navy Blue from the DecoArt Americana line for the drawers, to make it two-toned.  As usual, I mixed my own "Chalky-finish" to it.  I don't dare say the other word as there is currently a very big ongoing trademark issue with a particular brand.  If you want to know how I mix my paint, you can check out my tutorial that I won't even link at the moment. ;)  Just search it.  It's here.

Nautical Dreams and some progress...

Alright, I'll admit it: I recently got chastised by my surgeon.  Why?  Apparently, E and hubby might have been right.  (sigh. Somewhere across town, E is jumping for joy and relishing the thought that I just said she was right on a public forum.)  I have to take it easy and stop trying to DIY myself into a tizzy or back in the hospital since my surgery isn't healing properly.

So I'm frustrated and STUCK.  I realized today that even though it's not moving as quickly as I have hoped prior to my surgery being done, we are making slow but steady progress in the boys' room!

We managed to make and install some custom curtains and window treatments.  I posted the tutorial and admitted to misspelling my own kid's name.  I also gave the boys a place for them to hang their artwork and good grades by upholstering two cork boards who had seen better days.

My Aspieboy tells me daily how much he loves his Nautical String Art.  He truly enjoyed being a part of the stringing process, and often stands in front of where it's hanging, and just stares in awe at it.  Makes me the happiest Momma ever.

 I can't seem to get a good picture of this awesome 3D artwork I scored for only $5 at a garage sale!!  So amazing, right!?

 It's such a neat piece of artwork!  My mom bought the below piece at our local Cracker Barrel!  Thank you Mom!

I've added some "Evey touches" here or there, as well.  Here's one of the many vintage mason jars in the room, filled with shells from our various family vacations.  It's a chic way to keep some memories scattered throughout the space in a subtle way.

Behold, the sea biscuit that started it all!  Writing all of this out is making me feel slightly better.  Hooray for progress!

DIY Stenciled Valance, Bulletin Board and Cutting Edge Stencils Giveaway!

Hi y'all!  I've been busy working on the boys' nautical room redo!  The folks over at Cutting Edge Stencils sent me their awesome Fossil Fish stencil to try out and use in the boys' Nautical room redo! I absolutely love Cutting Edge Stencils and even got to go on a tour of their awesome factory a while back with some bloggy friends!

I decided I wanted to make a valance for the small window over the boys' bunk bed, as well as a fossil fish bulletin board to hang above their desk.

I used the leftover fabric from the curtains I had already made.  For the valance, I simply sewed a two-inch opening at the top for the curtain rod to fit in, then stenciled my two fish onto it.

The stencil was so easy to use!  I have said before that I love CES' stencils, and this one was no exception.  I taped it down and made sure I used the method of stenciling that Janna taught me herself.  I used a circular motion with the stencil brush provided by CES.  You can see this method in the below video.



For the Bullentin Board, I took two dollar store cork squares and covered them in drop cloth, then stenciled the fish onto them, as well.

I absolutely love the way it looks!

DIY Nautical-Inspired Curtains

 

Hi y'all!  Though I'm recovering from surgery, I have begun the process of redoing the boys' room!  Yesterday, I shared some artwork with you.  Today, I am sharing my Nautical-inspired curtains.

My grandma in law who has been taking care of the kids and house while I recover from surgery recently went to town on my linen closet and organized it for me.  (Somewhere on the other side of town E is shaking her head, imagining the disaster that my linen closet was until Grandma got up in there!) Whatever, E, whatever. ::insert pancake emoticon here::

Anyways, upon cleaning out my closet (just heard Eminem in my head...anyone else?), she found a long lost set of Ikea plain linen curtains that I forgot existed!  I had purchased them for $4 over 5 years ago with plans to cut them up and use the fabric for anything and everything EXCEPT as curtains. When she pulled them out, I knew immediately that I would paint them with a red strip and some blue lettering.

Materials Needed:

- Plain white linen curtains (or you can make some out of drop cloth)
-So Soft DecoArt paint in Santa Red and Primary Blue
- 4 inch foam paint roller and a flat paint brush
-Paint tray
-Newspaper to place under the curtain to protect the surface you are painting on. (I point this out to be helpful, not because I forgot to do it, or something, then spent a lot of time trying to get the paint off my dinner table.  No, just because I'm nice.)

Method:
Protect your surface, then tape down fabric to avoid any movement, then using the roller, make a long red line across the curtain.  I free-handed the lettering but you can use a stencil if you feel the need to. Whatever you do, though, DON'T MISSPELL YOUR OWN CHILD'S NAME! Yes, I did that, too. I fixed it, but still. Sigh.  Today was just not my day!

Here they are up! I'm very excited to see some progress in that room.
