One of my favorite aspects of my 'job' is teaching. I have the awesome honor of teaching some incredible 2nd and 3rd graders an Upcycled/Recycled Arts and Crafts through my wonderful Township's Education Foundation and their Community Education Program. Rehash that Trash: Reveal 2- Nautical inspired dresser

Hi y'all! :)

I realize I'm a day late and a dolla' short (what else is new?), BUT here is my 2nd reveal for our awesome "Rehash that Trash: Blogger Showdown"!!  Also,r I realize the pictures are AWFUL and dark, but it's super dark, dreary, and rainy here on my little mountain today.  Perhaps when the sun decides to visit my neck of the woods again, I will rephotograph this piece!

As per our "Trash List", this was supposed to be a storage piece! If you follow along here, you might know that I have been working on the boys' room for a few months now.  I decided to keep with the theme and add some sweet sailor's knots to the dresser as pulls!

If I hadn't been so dang sick last week, I might have finished my piece on time.  Alas...it's a good thing De was having some issues as well! ;)  Here's the full shot:

Yes, there is something clearly shoved underneath it.  I'm just keepin' it real, y'all!

Pardon the flash, but again, it was super dark!  I wanted to show you what is right above the dresser, some sweet $5 sailor's knots artwork I scored at a garage sale last summer.

Back to the dresser.
The color of the dresser was "oops paint" (giggle) and that meant it was on sale for $3!  I mixed in 5 drops of Navy Blue from the DecoArt Americana line for the drawers, to make it two-toned.  As usual, I mixed my own "Chalky-finish" to it.  I don't dare say the other word as there is currently a very big ongoing trademark issue with a particular brand.  If you want to know how I mix my paint, you can check out my tutorial that I won't even link at the moment. ;)  Just search it.  It's here.

Custom Jewelry Box

I was asked by a client to recreate a family crest from a Bat Mitzva invitation onto a jewelry box.  I absolutely loved making this piece!

To make sure the tree was perfect, I used my favorite transfer method before painting it in with a very thin detail brush.

I wanted to make the inside of the box pop, so I added contrasting colors for the inserts. The majority of the box was painted in DecoArt's "Soft Heather".

Then, I painted the inside of the box in Dragon Fruit.

The lettering and crest are in my favorite color: Purple Pizzaz. Doesn't that name just roll off your tongue?! :) {Sigh} It makes me happy. Hopefully, my client's niece will be happy, too.

DIY Nautical-Inspired Curtains

 

Hi y'all!  Though I'm recovering from surgery, I have begun the process of redoing the boys' room!  Yesterday, I shared some artwork with you.  Today, I am sharing my Nautical-inspired curtains.

My grandma in law who has been taking care of the kids and house while I recover from surgery recently went to town on my linen closet and organized it for me.  (Somewhere on the other side of town E is shaking her head, imagining the disaster that my linen closet was until Grandma got up in there!) Whatever, E, whatever. ::insert pancake emoticon here::

Anyways, upon cleaning out my closet (just heard Eminem in my head...anyone else?), she found a long lost set of Ikea plain linen curtains that I forgot existed!  I had purchased them for $4 over 5 years ago with plans to cut them up and use the fabric for anything and everything EXCEPT as curtains. When she pulled them out, I knew immediately that I would paint them with a red strip and some blue lettering.

Materials Needed:

- Plain white linen curtains (or you can make some out of drop cloth)
-So Soft DecoArt paint in Santa Red and Primary Blue
- 4 inch foam paint roller and a flat paint brush
-Paint tray
-Newspaper to place under the curtain to protect the surface you are painting on. (I point this out to be helpful, not because I forgot to do it, or something, then spent a lot of time trying to get the paint off my dinner table.  No, just because I'm nice.)

Method:
Protect your surface, then tape down fabric to avoid any movement, then using the roller, make a long red line across the curtain.  I free-handed the lettering but you can use a stencil if you feel the need to. Whatever you do, though, DON'T MISSPELL YOUR OWN CHILD'S NAME! Yes, I did that, too. I fixed it, but still. Sigh.  Today was just not my day!

Here they are up! I'm very excited to see some progress in that room.

Nautical String Art

Hi y'all! Today is World Autism Awareness Day! :) I am very excited to say that our Online Auction seems to be doing a fantastic job of raising funds for a very important (and dear to my heart) charity and cause! I've spoken about my son's Asperger's before, and I have to tell y'all, I'm so blessed to have him in my life! He has taught me so much in his 8 years of life!  I am a better person for having him in my world!

Don't mind the late-night blurry Cell picture, please! (P.S. Isn't he my Mini-me?!)

Anyway, back to my latest project for the boys' Nautical Room Redo!

I knew I wanted to create something one of a kind.  I had seen some heart and Valentine's Day string art floating around Pinterest back in February, so I began looking for something similar just nautical themed. Here is how I created this fun new take on a retro form of art.

Materials needed:
-Baker's Twine or jute/string
-Wooden board (I used some leftover wood from some shelving that I made for my cabinets)
-DecoArt's Americana Acrylic Paint in Navy Blue and Primary Red
-Large Brushes
-1" RingShank Panel Board Nails

I followed the instructions and printed out the .PDF pattern over at String Art Fun to make my sail boat.  I simply placed the paper over the painted wood and scored the dots with a nail to serve as a guide.  Then I went back and nailed each nail into each scored hole.  I left just about 1/4 of an inch raised from the wood to allow for dimension and easy stringing.  Instead of using string, I used Baker's Twine in Red, Navy Blue and Light Blue.

I had a blast making this! Just remember to pull the string tightly during each connection or it will fall apart towards the end.  (Don't ask me how I know this...)

I was thinking of adding some lettering but hubby thought it looked fine as is.  What do YOU think? Should I add lettering of just leave it?

I was thinking it should say something like "Come sail away with me", in white letters.

Either way, this was one of my favorite projects thus far for the boys' room redo!

Week of Love Giveaway 3: DecoArt Giveaway and Cupcake Artwork Tutorial

Day 3 y'all! I'm VERY excited about Day 3.  Why?  Well, because I get to share a really cool company with y'all! Also, I got to make something pretty. :) Well, I think it's pretty, at least!  Of COURSE it had a cupcake in it.

DecoArt sent me some really sweet paints, including their awesome Glamour Dust, which I'm now addicted to. They also agreed to give one of YOU this awesome Valentine's Day gift basket FULL of awesome paints and even a stencil!

So here is my tutorial:

I painted my piece of wood with some DecoArt Americana paint in Soft Heather.  Then I used my Cricut to make a cupcake stencil which I lightly penciled in.  I have to tell you, I'm am now obsessed with one of the brushes DecoArt sent me.  Matter of fact, I hope they're reading this post and shipping me a whole lifetime's supply! (giggle)

I cut a large doily into quarters and pasted them in the corners under the cupcake.  Then using my favorite transfer method, I got to filling in the lettering.  

I used Purple Pizzaz and Dragon Fruit for the lettering and cupcake.  I added a little sparkle with some Glamour Dust in Celebration Pink!
